Music Venues in Southampton

Music Venues in Southampton

Though maybe not the most obvious tour stop for live musicians, Southampton does have a vibrant music scene. It’s always a good idea to go and see as much live music as possible if you’re looking to improve your own performances (just remember those ear plugs, tinnitus is not the one!) The likes of Jules Holland, Elton John and classical pianists such as Alfred Brendel and Arthur Rubenstein do much more than play the piano, they perform with their own quirks and eccentricities, which is what you need to do if you want to get noticed. So head down with a paper pad and start making some notes!

Southampton Guildhall is one of Southampton’s biggest venue that attracts audiences of over 1,750 fans! Located at in a beautiful grade-two-listed building at The Civic Centre, SO14 7LP, the likes of Jamie T, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and Len Rawle (famous organist) are just a few of the acts that have performed there in recent months! It really is one of my favourite venues: without going to Plymouth, or even London, it is one of the only venues that draw larger acts to the city and for that reason, it should be supported!

The Mo Club is an extraordinarily diverse music venue that doubles up during the day to become a roller skating cafe hangout! Bands like Natives, Fear Factory, Devin Townsend Project and TesseracT have rocked the surprisingly large venue capacity of 400 - a local venue perfectly sized for a medium sized local band. Located down at the West Quay Road Industrial Estate, SO15 1GZ, the Mo Club is certainly worth checking out!

All of Southampton’s younger crowd will know that the University of Southampton Student Union is the place to see artists aimed at the fresher spectrum and has drawn acts such Chase and Status, Pete Doherty (of Libertines and Babyshambles fame) and We Are Scientists. Other added bonuses are the cheap drinks (if you're over 18, of course) and the lively crowds; as we all know, students like to get a little rowdy from time to time, and the mix of youthful energy and volatile hormones means that each performance is likely to be a corker! Located on University Road, SO17 1BJ the SU should be a staple diet for all local music fans.

The Brook describes itself as ‘The South Coast’s Premier Live Music Venue’ and who are we to disagree?! No other venues in Hampshire can boast such a rich heritage in piano music, with Bob Malone (John Fogerty and Bruce Springsteen’s blues keyboard player), Elio Pace and Jo Harman having played only in the last year. It’s also well-known for it’s great selection of real ales and intimate character, so no wonder it’s listed as the top tourist attraction in Southampton on Trip Advisor! Any aspiring pianists in the area really should head down to have a look, so keep an eye out for the gigs happening down at The Brook, 466 Portswood Road, SO17 3SD.
